Peggy Pin Tung

Peggy Tung of Berkeley Heights, NJ passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at University Hospital in Newark, NJ. She was 74.

Born in Taiwan, Peggy received her bachelor’s degree in physics from National Taiwan University in 1972. Afterwards, she came to the United States to study at Yale University on a scholarship where she received her master’s degree in 1973, followed by her Ph.D. in 1977, both in physics. Her dissertation was in nuclear physics. She met her husband, John Michejda, while they were both pursuing their doctorate degrees at Yale.

Peggy worked at AT&T from 1977 to 2000. She started at Bell Labs and, after 6 years, transitioned to other AT&T divisions where she worked for 16 more years and retired as division manager in 2000. Four years later, after taking a Spanish language course, she turned her attention to education where she worked as an adjunct professor teaching Chinese and mathematics at Union County College in Cranford, NJ for 10 years. Later, she spent time teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) for three years.

Outside of her work, Peggy was a member of Literacy NJ, the Organization of Chinese Americans (OCA), and the Yale Club of Central New Jersey. She enjoyed reading books and was a member of a book club founded by her friends. She took pleasure in being with friends and family, mentoring, tutoring Chinese and mathematics, sewing, gardening, feeding birds that visited her backyard, traveling, and learning Spanish. At the same time, she was also a proud mother of two Eagle Scouts.

Peggy will be remembered as being very friendly, warm, caring, generous, compassionate, and loved by everyone whose lives she touched. She was very loving and devoted, both as a wife and as a mother. Smart, thoughtful, and extraordinarily intelligent, she was a natural leader who treated everyone with respect. She was a well-regarded member of the community.

Peggy was the beloved wife of John Michejda for 47 years and the loving mother of Steven and Michael Michejda. She is also survived by her brothers (Simon and Lawrence Tung), their wives, and her nephews and nieces.
