Peter R. Willis, 83, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.
Born and raised in Jersey City, New Jersey, Peter rose from humble beginnings to become one of New Jersey’s most respected criminal defense attorneys. Gifted with a rare talent for trial advocacy, he built a distinguished career representing clients in state and federal courts across the nation. Throughout his career, he earned the admiration of judges, prosecutors, and fellow defense attorneys alike and was recently honored with the Hudson County Bar Association Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his decades of service to the legal profession.
Beyond the courtroom, Peter was known for his compassion, generosity, and unwavering commitment to helping others. He mentored young attorneys, led Alcoholics Anonymous meetings, and freely gave his time, wisdom, and encouragement to anyone in need. He will be remembered not only for his remarkable legal career, but for the kindness, integrity, and humanity that defined his life.
Peter was the beloved husband of Leigh Willis for 40 wonderful years; the devoted father of Michael, Jason, Winston, and Jenna; the proud and loving grandfather of Presley Anne Willis; the cherished brother of Madge Novel; and the beloved uncle of Max Novel, whom he loved as a son.
His legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched as an advocate, mentor, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend.
