Emma Jean Dicks-Carney was born on July 16, 1950, in Newark, New Jersey, to Georgia Mae Dicks (Moody) and Clinton Dicks. She attended Charlton St. School and Southside High School before going on to study nursing at Essex County College.

She parented her children while working for USPS, eventually moving on to pursue other career paths. Always the family medic, she became a CNA working at hospitals in Morris, and Passaic counties. She finally retired from working after 12 years with Walmart. Emma was a caretaker at heart. She cared for her mother, father, son, and nephew, personifying what it means to love and care for your family. A true house-head, Emma could often be found dancing to some of her favorite beats. Whether surrounded by family, traveling, or simply dancing, Emma embraced life and embodied the saying, “Living Life to the Fullest!”

She was preceded in death by her parents, Georgia and Clinton Dicks; husbands, James

Johnson and Donald Carney; brother, Kenneth Dicks; sons, Damon E. Johnson and Shawn

Johnson; and nephew, Aaron J. Carter.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Saida [Michelle] (Abdush); sons, Michael and

Vaughn (Bonita); sisters, Brenda Carter and Vanessa (Carlton) Smith ; brothers, Mark (Emma)

and Michael (Susan) Dicks; grandchildren, Sakinah, Ibn, Sabayya, Bresana, Shaquan, Asmaa,

and Shamir; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and other loving

family members
