The Journey

Our Lord graciously ordained it to be so—as such, His loving and humble servant, Mae Dell Culver’s blessed birth occurred on Friday, October 9, 1936 in Abbeville, Alabama. She was born to Mary B. Tinsley and Booker T. Tinsley, both of whom preceded her in death. Mae Dell’s three siblings, whom also preceded her in death include: James Tinsley; Charles Tinsley; and Robbie Tinsley. Further, three children who preceded her in death include: Patricia Culver; Carolyn Culver; and Donald Culver. Lastly, one granddaughter who also preceded her in death includes: Courtney Culver.

Mae Dell attended the Henry County Training School in Abbeville, AL, where she excelled academically! She was a member of Capps Church of God in Christ, where she accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. The Lord was gracious as He bestowed Mae Dell with numerous gifts! One of which was her extraordinary vocal abilities! Mae Dell was a featured soloist at Capps Church—her signature tune was entitled, “I Know the Lord Will Make a Way Somehow.” Her masterful rendition of this song’s timeless and powerful lyrical truths, garnered standing ovations!

In addition—Mae Dell was an absolute culinary genius! She prepared numerous crowd pleasing dishes including: egg custards for her mom, who thoroughly enjoyed them; bread pudding, cakes, and many other delectable entrees! Further, Mae Dell found great comfort in spending time outdoors enjoying the beauty of God’s creation! Because of her love of gardening, she often planted peppers and lots of beautiful flowers—particularly on Mother’s Day! As a result, she was referred to as the “Flower Lady.” Mae Dell also found great pleasure in grilling and relaxing at family cookouts! As a child, she enjoyed fishing with her siblings as she excitedly caught perch and catfish! A sense of serenity seemed to surround her during these times!

Mae Dell was married to the late Willie Culver of Abbeville, AL. From this union, the Lord blessed her with six children—two sons and four daughters. Upon relocating to Newark, NJ, in order to enhance her spiritual growth and development, Mae Dell joined Unity Temple Church of God in Christ, where she raised her children in the knowledge and admonition of the Lord.

Mae Dell was employed at Remco Industries, Inc. as well as holding several positions as a Domestic Engineer. She was well-regarded by each of her employers—this was a testament to her level of integrity, dedication, and overall commitment to each assignment.
