Sandra Yvonne Davis

Sandra Yvonne (Simmons) Davis, 80, native of Cambridge, Massachusetts and resident of East Orange, New Jersey was born on April 3, 1944. She was the daughter of the late Mabel Green Levarity and Samuel House Simmons. She peacefully passed away on May 17, 2024, following a prolonged illness. She fought with a defined spirit of determination.

Sandra, affectionately called “Sandy”, was the second eldest of seven children. She and her older brother Tom were born ten months apart and liked to call themselves “Irish twins” because for two months every year, they were the same age. Sandy relished the fact of being the eldest sister and she liked to take charge of her younger siblings, reminding them that she was the oldest sister.

Sandy attended Cambridge High and Latin High school. She was known for loving to dance and attend house parties with her brother, Tom. They had fun going to visit their cousins in New York to swap the latest dance moves. As a result, she was fondly referred to as “Sandy Cool” in the neighborhood where she grew up.

Sandy accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age at the Apostolic Pentecostal Church in Cambridge, MA. She participated in Summer Vacation Bible School, Sunday School, and Youth Activities at Western Avenue Baptist Church. Sandy and her sisters, Charlotte and Valdace, joined the VFW Post. As members, they loved marching together in the Memorial Day and Fourth of July Parades.

Sandy experienced a full life. She married the late Al Davis of the US Navy and she moved from Massachusetts to Chicago to New Jersey. She fell in love with the state of NJ and lived there for the remainder of her life. Sandy is fondly remembered for her love of life. She was independent minded and liked to celebrate life in the moment. She was high spirited and had lots of energy. She relished the good times with good friends. She enjoyed traveling, taking bus trips, music venues, dancing, and going out to eat, especially at her favorite restaurant, Red Lobster.

Sandy worked at Necco Candy Factory in Massachusetts. She also Volunteered at City Hall in NJ. She was a member of the Grand Chapter of Eastern Stars in Bridgewater, NJ. Although she had no children of her own, she adored the offspring of her siblings, which were her nieces and nephews. They affectionately referred to her as “Auntie or Aunt Sandy”. After relocating to NJ, she enjoyed returning to Cambridge for Thanksgiving prior to the passing of her mother and she would attend family events, weddings, birthday parties and special occasions. She had a special way of caring for her siblings and inquiring about her nieces and nephews.

Sandy was preceded in death by her parents, Mabel Green Levarity, and Samuel House Simmons. Spouse, Al Davis. Brothers: Thomas S. Simmons and Eugene H. Levarity. Brother, Richard Levarity. Brother-in-law, Charlie Thornton. Nieces: Cynthia Simmons, Janeka Levarity and Trina Anderson.
