Betty Sue Rose

Betty Sue Rose (nee Bryant), affectionately known as “Bets”, was born in Hartford, Alabama on December 13, 1943, to the late Robert “Dude” Snell and Cora Lee Shelley.  Betty departed this life on July 4, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. Betty touched the lives of so many with her warmth, kindness, and unwavering dedication to her family and friends.

In May of 1962, Betty graduated from Hartford High School before moving to Newark, New Jersey.  Betty’s journey from Hartford, Alabama to Newark, New Jersey in 1962 marked the beginning of a life filled with love and happiness.  She was introduced to William E. Rose, Sr. (Chicken), and the two married on May 11, 1963. From this union, William Jr., Wayne, and Melissa were born.  As a devoted wife and mother Betty’s love knew no bounds.  Her commitment to family extended to caring for her sister Pearl’s son, Omar, whom she welcomed as her own, cared for, supported and loved until her passing.

Betty’s enthusiasm for sports was evident in her active participation in softball and her dedication to coaching girls little league softball.  Betty’s passion for tennis and the World Series of Poker brought her immense joy. Betty’s home was a haven of comfort for all, where family gatherings were filled with laughter, love and sports.  She provided family and friends with delicious meals and was famous for her macaroni and cheese.  

Throughout her career, Betty formed lasting relationships while working for Montclair Neighborhood Development Corporation. Her retirement years were spent cherishing her family, enjoying sports, family games, sitting on her porch relaxing, and embracing the simple joys of life.

Betty’s faith and dedication to the Lord were evident through her prayers and beliefs. Betty’s infectious smile, sense of humor, and immense heart will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.  Her love and legacy will live on in our memories forever.

Betty was predeceased by her parents Robert Snell and Cora Lee Shelley, siblings Lily Mae Bryant, James Rudolph Bryant, Rosie Marie Anderson and Willie Pearl Shelley.

Btty leaves to cherish her memory her husband of 61 years, William E. Rose Sr.; her children William E. Rose Jr. (Lavora), Wayne Rose (Shonda), Melissa Rose and Omar Shelley; grandchildren Justin Rose, Ryan Rose, Jared Rose, Kayla Rose, Kennedy Rose Phillips and Kirsten Rose; great-grandchildren Myla Rose and Ryan Rose II and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family and friends.
