On October 19, 2025, Henrietta Stewart Young departed peacefully in her sleep. Henrietta was born March 3, 1935 in Remsley Point, SC, and raised by her Aunt Susie Gorham Singletary. She moved to Paterson, NJ in September 1952. Ms. Young is preceded in death by her late husband Gilbert Young.
Henrietta arrived in the big city full of life, dreams, and hope. She immediately ventured into developing a long-lasting career in the world of cosmetology. Henrietta joined a force of legendary beauticians in Passaic County who were known as celebrity hair stylists. Her business partner Rita Lingham and her tenure lasted for over five decades. Later in life her hands on training and instruction on hair cutting, hair coloring, and chemical services landed her the lead position for Revlon Labs (NYC/NJ). During 1970 to 1980, she traveled to African Countries setting the stage to introduce Revlon hair products.
Henrietta Young was a long-time member of Community Baptist Church of Love, where she served in many capacities, especially as a “Songbird” in the gospel choir. Henrietta’s faith in God extended to her commitment and dedication to the Order of the Eastern Stars Fidelity Chapter #16, Prince Hall Affiliation. Her activism and sincerity were a delight working in the community. As a volunteer, she became a stalwart in her community at her church’s pantry, coordinating social events for the Paterson AARP, and serving on the Paterson YWCA Board.
Henrietta leaves behind her daughter Pamela Stewart (Paterson); two grandsons Malcolm and Malik Hill (Paterson); one sister Barbara Gorham (GA); niece Cheryl (Anthony) Biggs (GA); three nephews Rodney Gorham (TX); Eugene Gorham (Paterson); Lenny (Debbie) Gorham (FL); and a host of beloved great-nephews and nieces, cousins, friends, and supporters. She will also be greatly missed by her best friends and confidants Virginia Snead, and Irma Gorham.
